This descriptive cross-sectional study was conduct on 167 nursing employees at three educational hospitals affiliated to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Iran in 2015. The data collection tool was a questionnaire developed by Hakimzadeh et al. (2010) containing demographic characteristics, Maslach’s Professional Burnout Inventory (MBI), Spielberger’s state-trait anxiety inventory, and The Relationship between Business Stress and Burnout among Nursing Employees Scale.


Burnout is a syndrome that has three dimensions that include emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment. The prevalence rate of burnout among nurses has been report as 44.7%. In the nursing profession, the risk of burnout is highly associating with work-related factors which include a lack of interpersonal relationships and a high workload. According to studies, job stress can be a risk factor for developing depression and anxiety disorders. Furthermore, nurses who have developed psychological problems including depression and anxiety due to job stress are likely to show dysfunctions in other aspects such as marriage, parenting, health problems, social activities, subjective well-being, and job performance. Emotional exhaustion is one of three dimensions that comprise the concept of burnout.

It has been defining as “a state consisting of being emotionally overextending. And feeling empty and burned out because of one’s job”. This dimension is physiologically associating with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis which includes important structures that affect an individual’s adaptation to stress.
